Update!

It has been a very busy few weeks so we couldn’t quite keep you up to date with everything that is going on. This week we have been focusing on certain things like: a competition for a new logo, comics, calendar, recipes and a poster to put up in the Plough to explain how we provide them with vegetables.

Plant Care – This month, Plant Care have been very busy making a calendar about what type of fruit we can grow each month. They have also been finding and buying loads of seeds for the spring time. We also got a few seeds from a very nice lady called Margret. She gave us some Dwarf beans (Sonesta and Purple Teepee) and some Coriander seeds.

We are also collecting horse manure so if you have any please (if you can) donate some to us. Here is some of the things the Plant Care Team are going to grow: French Beans, Rhubarb, Lettuce, Strawberries, Broccoli and Apples.

Accounts Manager and Spokesperson – This month, the Accounts Manager and Spokesperson worked together to make an amazing poster for the Plough in Wangford. They did this so that the customers eating at the Plough will know exactly where the fruit and vegetables come from.

Groundsperson – The Groundsperson is doing a very important job. Right now, as we speak, he is looking for a space to lay down some new beds.

Marketing – The Marketing Team are making a new comic for you all to enjoy. The comic they are making will include word-processed pictures and a creative story.

Packaging and Despatch – These past weeks, the Packaging and Despatch want to become eco-friendly! We are going to try to make our own packaging more recyclable and we are also going to buy eco-friendly slug tape. This is very big to us as we have never done anything like this before.

Finance- The finance team have been working very hard trying to get our name out there by making some professional business cards. They have also been making some PowerPoints to show the 2016-2019 data for our crops. This will help us sort out how much money we make and what crops we should be growing in 2020.

Public Relations- They are working out the distance between supermarkets and if people feel they travel too many miles to the supermarkets then we could potentially make our own shop.

Update.

Happy New year everyone! This year we are going to have THE BEST year; we have a feeling it’s going to be a good year for growing vegetables! We just wanted to let you all know what we were doing so you guys know. Right now we are doing lots of number crunching, charts and graphs to try and work out which vegetables we should grow to make a good profit this year. We now have an email address if anyone would like to contact us: vegetablesrus@hotmail.com. This year we are going to try and do a lot of our subject learning through our ‘Food For Thought’ sessions. We are also hoping to get a bit further with ordering and building our greenhouse to replace the poly tunnel that blew away! We will be working with Adnams again to sell our crops with all our lovely, organic fruit and vegetables going to ‘The Plough’ in Wangford. We are also sharing our project with Castle Hill Primary School in Ipswich, helping them to set up their own ‘Food For Thought’ project. We will update you again when we have some more information…we have a busy year planned for 2020!!

Hiya

I’m sorry we haven’t updated for quite a long time but we have been very busy with our new recipe book and we estimate that it will probably be ready by Christmas.

Class 4 are very excited about it and there is lots of fun games and recipes for parents and children to enjoy together. These recipes are quite easy to make and some of them are just little things that you can make and just snack on. Such as: smoothies, coleslaw and delicious desserts.

I hope we can start getting on top of the blog so we can tell you all the updates. I hope we can get back in touch soon. Bye for now! J

Monday 16^th September

Hello it has been a long time since we last posted but we have been very busy. We have been having quite a bad time with the weather and the plants haven’t been doing so well. Today we have a teacher from castle hill called Miss Frost come over so we can tell her about our business. She is also starting a business like ours, this could be a perfect opportunity to show how brilliant our business is.

 The story is that it has been really hot and we haven’t had much rain so our vegetables are getting dryer so the insects and all the pests are eating our vegetables. We have got new people in our business now as the old year 6s have moved into high school so we have needed time to sort it all out. To add to this, we have two new groups. The names of these new groups called spokesperson and ground person. Ground person is linked into plant care team and the finance team. The spokesperson is linked to public relations and accounts manager. We will update you when we next have more news. But for now we will see you later. Bye!

Wednesday 27th February

Today we looked around our beds and observed the Rhubarb sprouts and all the bothersome weeds covering the plants. We came inside and created an action plan to get rid of the pesky weeds. The finance team are working out how much money we will be able to make from our future crops. PR (Public Relations) are writing a piece about our business for the Wenhaston Warbler to try and attract their attention to raise enough money to be able to purchase a greenhouse and revamp the growing beds.

We have other teams working a sweat to try and find the right plants for the shady and sunny areas of our school. The Marketing Team are also working hard to create a new logo to paste on our boxes for our produce that we send out to Adnams pubs.                                             

Mr Welby works for Syngenta, his job involves working with plants and crops and also working with food sprays. The company own a lot of seeds! He has kindly offered to help our business with any seeds or seedlings he can provide for us. The plant care team are very busy working out a list of plants that we might need for Mr Welby.

Finally the Finance Team are sending invoices to Adnams by email and they are making spreadsheets to keep track of what we receive from Adnams and what we spend, also they keep track of the profits for our crops and they make bar charts and graphs to see the information on how much our crops make when we sell them.

Review of 2018 Growing Season

 

What a busy year it was in the garden! The year started with the challenge from ‘The Beast from the East’. It took quite a while for the soil to warm up and allow us to plant our crops. Then followed ‘The great drought of 2019’…another set of challenges as we tried to make sure our plants had enough water to grow. It did make us think how ‘climate change’ might alter the way we look after our garden.

Another goodbye in 2018 was to the allotment. We had thoroughly enjoyed our time there and had turned it into a good growing space. However we decided that it was time to focus our energies and resources on our own school plot…working together to create new growing areas and a greenhouse.

2018 proved to be another highly successful year for the ‘Vegetables R Us’ team. Altogether we made £283.96 profit and the new team we have in place worked wonderfully together….quickly taking on their new roles and responsibilities within the team.

Now the growing season has ended and we look towards the future and how best to spend our profits on growing our business still further!

 

Tuesday 17^th July 2018

A Bumper Harvest!

 

This year has seen our ‘Veggies R Us’ project continue to flourish. With plenty of planting on the school site, today was the day to harvest our produce and ship them to ‘The Plough’ at Wangford. We also had a surprise visitor with Siobhan coming into school to see how we were getting on!

As you can see…we have a bumper harvest of Gooseberries, Chard, Iceberg Lettuce and Rhubarb. Although the dry weather has diminished our crop a little, we have still managed to provide ‘The Plough’ with 4 harvests of our crops.

Harvesting has been a challenge with the weather set so dry and warm. The team have to quickly harvest their crops, weight them, wrap them all and deliver them all in the space of an hour. Quite a challenge but ‘Team Veggies R Us’ have risen well to it! Our finance team are now used to preparing invoices and sending them to Adnams for payment.

Looking ahead we are hoping to buy our long awaited greenhouse over the winter to enable us to grow tomatoes and cucumbers. We are also putting systems in place to make our allotment plot more manageable…lots of thinking required to tackle a changing climate! Let’s hope for some night-time showers soon!
